Labyrinth of Touhou 3.01 - Team Unappreciated vs. Flame Tyrant (No PAR)

This boss was suppose to be a total joke. Gesh86 requested that I fight this boss without resorting to using paralysis, and I agreed, thinking he can't be that hard, right? I mean, it's just a suped-up version of Rinnosuke's easiest elemental form, so it'll be a piece of cake to just go nuts with Fire affinity equipment and resist all his spells, right? Wrong. Oh, so very wrong. Team Unappreciated: Meiling (lvl 219) Minoriko (lvl 223) Rumia (lvl 225) Wriggle (lvl 219) Iku (lvl 211) Nitori (lvl 216) Reisen (lvl 208) Mokou (lvl 206) Orin (lvl 210) Renko (lvl 216) Maribel (lvl 212) Keine (lvl 210) As it turns out, the Flame Tyrant possesses an astounding 60,000 points of MAG. That's about three times as high as the previous boss's, the Celestial Bright Demon. I had well over 500 Fire affinity on several of my characters, yet they were still taking 15-25k damage from each spell! With neutral affinity, the Flame Tyrant's attacks would probably have dealt well over 100,000 damage. Unlike the Foe line of enemies, the Flame Tyrant is free to spam Flowing Hellfire as much as it pleases. I've had him use it 3 times in a row before, which is easily an instant wipe given that it still hits Meiling with 500+ affinity for nearly 20k damage (and tends to OHKO most other characters, or come close to it). Defensively, the Flame Tyrant has equal DEF and MND, and is of course weak to Cold but extremely resistant to Fire, and also has 50% resistance to Spirit and Mystic. He's very resistant to debuffs, but has a cripplingly low resistance to paralysis. That's why he's regarded as a joke boss: it's not too difficult to literally keep him paralyzed for the entire battle. He doesn't have that much HP (same as Baal Avatar, but with much less DEF), so he's not hard to kill at all. But if you let him actually attack... It actually took me several tries before I worked out a successful strategy. At first, I tried to keep Rumia in full-time with max MAG buffs and just have her spam Demarcation, but even with 500+ Fire affinity she was still dying way faster than she could heal (and Flowing Hellfire was a OHKO with 400 Fire affinity). Finally, I decided on using Orin as a dedicated switcher, as she has very high MND along with naturally high Fire affinity and Cat's Walk for manipulating her turn order. Nitori was my best source of damage, of course, so I outfitted her for maximum damage output, completely ignoring her defenses and affinities. Pretty much every single attack the Flame Tyrant has could kill her three times over, but I wasn't planning on letting her ever get hit. Maribel was sort of a backup damage dealer, although I didn't have a good opportunity to use her until the end. Everyone else I just stacked with as much Fire affinity gear as I could find, and simply served as sponges for soaking up the Flame Tyrant's attacks. But even with 400+ affinity on most of them, they still ended up dying pretty quickly. A few other notes: 1. Cat's Walk is really nifty if you want Orin to switch someone out immediately after they attack. With a 90% post-usage gauge and Orin's high speed, it was easy to switch in and out characters that are normally slower than Orin, such as Rumia. 2. The reason why I used Optical Camouflage on Nitori's first turn was because I needed her to be faster than Orin in order to switch her in and out as efficiently as possible, without having to resort to Cat's Walk (which would cost me more time). It was crucial for Nitori to be exposed as little as possible throughout the fight. 3. It actually took a lot of effort and tries to get the speeds down perfectly for the first set of switches, as I had to try several different combinations of speed skill point boosts and equipment. I'm pretty obsessive over these kinds of things. 4. Rumia's Demarcation really isn't a bad healing spell by this point in the game. Since I'm using Iku for offensive buffs anyway, it's not hard to get it to cure 15k HP or so per cast. Plus, Moonlight Ray hits ridiculously hard with all those offensive buffs. I've actually been using Rumia more and more as I make my way to the higher floors. 5. For those who've noticed that Mokou and Keine don't really seem to do much in these fights: yes, it's true that I don't really use them in boss fights that much (unless I need a damage sponge), but they really are great in random battles. Keine was my save file's profile picture (due to having the highest battle points) for the longest time, although Mokou has just usurped her position as of Floor 24.
